Movie Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel

I haven’t written a review in a while so decided would write a short review of Wes Andersons’s latest and best movie to date.  I have not been a big fan of some of his earlier movies, but with Moonrise Kingdom and now The Grand Budapest Hotel I feel he is becoming the great director people have been saying he was all along.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is about the adventures of the hotel concierge Monsieur Gustav (Ralph Fiennes) and his protégé Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori). Gustav sets out to please everyone who comes to the hotel especially the wealthy elderly ladies.  When one of them dies she leaves an expensive painting to Gustav much to the displeasure of her family.  The family then frames Gustav for her murder. Gustav and Zero along with a bizarre cast of characters must try to clear Gustav’s name.

The movie has the typical Wes Anderson quirkiness and manic pace that works really way in the setting of a murder mystery.  The other trademark of Wes Anderson films is the snappy dialogue, and this movie had lots of it.  It cam quick and was hilarious.  The cast was amazing.  Each one brought the weirdness of their character to life so well.   I am use to seeing Ralph Fiennes in more serious roles but he was hysterical as Gustav.    Other standouts were Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, and Harvey Keitel.  Another highlight of the movie was the great score by Alexander Desplat which was both fun and original.

This is the first movie of the year to get some serious Oscar talks and hopefully it can keep that momentum up because I have a feeling that this will be one of the best movies of the year.

Overall: One of the funniest movies I have seen in a while. Totally a crowd pleaser.  5/5
